State League convention time is almost here

The biennial League state convention is just two months away, so if you want to attend, it’s time to make your plans.

Anyone is welcome to attend, but our league is limited to 12 voting delegates. There are several delegate slots still open. If you are interested in being a delegate, contact Sue Robertson-Dodd,

The convention is April 27-29 at the Inn of the Hills in Kerrville, just a little over an hour’s drive away. It’s a great time to be in the Hill Country – wildflowers should be abundant and the weather beautiful.

Lots of workshops are planned, and there will be plenty of opportunities to meet other League members from all over the state who are working toward common goals. The state League will be electing a new president and board, and voting delegates will decide on the proposed program for the next two years.

Registration is $125 per person, $150 after March 30.  A block of rooms is available at the Inn of the Hills in Kerrville at a discounted rate for League members.

Eminent domain as update on land use position to be discussed at convention

In December San Antonio League members held a discussion as part of the biennial process of state program planning. Here was agreement that the issue of eminent domain could be a candidate for study by LWV-Texas.  We submitted our proposal to the state League, and the following is the reply:

The Education Committee of the LWV-TX Board reviewed the San Antonio League’s recommendation of a study of eminent domain in Texas to understand its history, current application and policies. While we agreed that this is a subject that deserves further investigation, we thought it would be better as an update of our current position on Land Use. The Board is, therefore, recommending an update of our position on Land Use to include the topics of eminent domain and environmental impact. The current position on Land Use can be found at

The update is subject to identification of an update committee chair. If you know of someone in the San Antonio League who would like to head the committee, please let me know. The recommended update will be presented at the State Convention in April; if there is a committee chair, we can work on forming a committee at Convention with members from various Leagues.

If you have any questions, let me know.

LWVSAA’s program planning committee will be discussing our next steps.  We have tentative plans to sponsor a forum or speaker on the subject of eminent domain in June.
