League will engage with potential voters at upcoming San Antonio Foodbank Mass Distribution
Did you know that the San Antonio Food Bank is still holding mass distributions at Gustafson Stadium a couple of Fridays a month?
In partnership with the Food Bank, the League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area walks the lines to talk to Food Bank clients about the next election.
During this past General Election cycle for November 5, League volunteers were invited out three times to talk to San Antonio Food Bank clients. We had a great mix of new and returning Food Bank Distribution volunteers—17 volunteers worked one or more times—and in a short amount of time accomplished a lot. Each time, we had a little under two hours to walk the line and talk about the importance of voting and having a voting plan. We had 1,221 conversations with potential voters! We also handed out 138 Mail-In Voter Registration Applications and 23 Ballot by Mail Applications. We had for the first time the LWVSA’s Voters Guide in both English and Spanish to give out. We gave out 256 English and 34 Spanish Voters Guides to help voters research the candidates and propositions on the ballot.
The Food Bank invited the League to come out to their Holiday Distribution on December 18 at the Alamodome. We will be reminding people that the San Antonio Mayoral and City Council election is in May and handing out voter registration forms to anyone that needs them. It is not too late to sign up and help at this event. Sign up to help with this event at this link.
The San Antonio Food Bank recently announced that they will be moving away from the “mega-distributions” at Gustafson to smaller distributions throughout their service area. This does not mean the need for food assistance has lessened. The Food Bank states that smaller distributions will be easier on staff and volunteers
and better for recipients. The League will continue to work with the Food Bank to continue to assist their clientele with the voting resources they need.
