About Us

Empowering Voters. Defending Democracy.

The League of Women Voters is a grassroots organization that has fought since 1920 to improve government and engage all voters in the decisions that impact their lives. Formed from the movement that secured the right to vote for women, the centerpiece of the League’s effort remains to expand civic participation and give a voice to all Americans through broad educational efforts and advocacy.

Now celebrating 100 years, the endurance of the League of Women Voters over ten decades comes from its unique decentralized structure, a national organization with more than 700 state and local Leagues in all 50 states, as well as in the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, and Hong Kong.

Our local League, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has been empowering voters in the San Antonio area since 1940.

The League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area envisions a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate in the electoral process.
