League Advocacy
We are all aware that the League of Women Voters is non-partisan. We never take a position on candidates or political parties. However, the Texas League does support specific issues of importance to our country.
As you would expect, the League supports voting rights and laws that can enhance participation and convenience in voting. The League supports fair and effective representation using a redistricting process and standards that allow for maximum opportunity for public review.
Other issues the Texas League specifically supports include: Women’s health and reproductive choice, adequate funding for public education, and gun safety through violence prevention programs and limited access and regulate ownership of handguns and semi-automatic weapons.
The Texas League does not stop there. Also on their list of issues they support are: 1) Improving the criminal justice system through meaningful sentencing and bail reforms, and provision of adequate health care and educational opportunities during incarceration; 2) Reducing, reusing or recycling solid and hazardous wastes; 3) Protecting the public health and environmental safety on nuclear issues with public education and participation in decisions; 4) Supporting appointments, retention and/or the non-partisan election of the judiciary and 5) Open government at all levels.
Finally, as you will read in more detail in a separate newsletter article, the Texas League of Women Voters is strongly advocating for the wellbeing of children, especially those who are most vulnerable in our state.
