At the LWVSA’s Annual Meeting on May 17, League members kicked off the League’s Summer of Action by writing more than 70 postcards to our senators. The messages we sent asked Senators Cruz and Cornyn to vote “no” in opposition to the SAVE Act which requires documentation of citizenship to register to vote.
Summer of Action is LWVSA’s grassroots mobilization in support of LWV’s powerful new initiative, Unite and Rise 8.5. As announced by Dianna Wynn, president of the League of Women Voters, Unite and Rise 8.5 aims to engage 8.5 million individuals against the anti-democratic actions taken by our elected officials.
Why 8.5? The number 8.5 million is the estimated number of voters it will take to bring about change through nonviolent protest. This is based on the findings from the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights. Social movements engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change. According to the University of Florida, approximately 245 million Americans were eligible to vote in the 2024 general election. Accordingly, if 3.5% of these eligible voters — 8,575,000 people — become civically engaged in nonviolent protests, we willbring about meaningful change.
LWVSA, through its Summer of Action, has a goal of sending 1,000 messages to elected officials by August 31. The number of postcards mailed by League members and friends has already surpassed 230, 23% of our goal. We are making it easy to join others to make change! Here is how to get involved:
Gather friends at your home or other location to send your elected officials messages that urge them to defend democracy. Sign up and find more instructions at the Summer of Action.
Attend the League’s Get to Know the League event on June 28 and bring your friends! For additional information and the registration link, click here.
Follow the League on social media and share LWVSA’s posts with your friends. By sharing the League’s nonpartisan information, you enlarge the League’s impact.
Volunteer to educate others about voting and elections at fun events this summer. No experience is necessary, but there is a link to a video training available on the League's home page. Click here to volunteer.
Join the League, if you are not a member, and ask your friends to join, too. It is easy and League dues are reasonable, starting as low as $20 annually, with a recommended amount of $75. Additionally, when you join, you automatically
are part of the national, state and local Leagues, tripling your impact on issues that you care about!
