Research & Advocacy Priorities

Diane Simpson, VP Program & Advocacy | Published on 5/28/2026

The Program and Advocacy Committee received Board approval to propose the following three priority issues, which then were adopted by members at the Annual LWVSA meeting:

Voting and Elections
(always a priority):
How will legislative and executive actions affect voters in Texas?
What can be done to ensure voters' rights and streamline the registration and voting processes?
How can LWVSA best advocate for Bexar County voters?

Immigration Detention Centers:
Are detainees' physical, mental and emotional health provided for?
Is due process uniformly followed and enforced?
Are detainee retention times in the center within legal limits?
Are minor detainees provided adequate education, medical care, and exercise?

Artificial Intelligence and Data Centers:
How are large data centers impacting the environment in Bexar County, including air quality and energy and water availability?
What impacts do data centers have on the county’s economy?
How might AI be used to attempt to influence voters, impact voting rights and/or affect vote security?
What steps can local and state governments take to mitigate any negative effects of the proliferation of such AI data centers?

It will be a busy year for members of the Program and Advocacy Committee. If these three issues are of special interest to you, please considering joining the committee, by contacting Diane Simpson at advocacy@lwvsa.org .
