The Program & Advocacy committee educates citizens on issues impacting our community. On April 7th, LWVSA’s Speaker Series presented findings from their research on child welfare. The presentation was followed by an engaging Q&A session with attendees. See their findings, conclusions and the committee’s future directions.

The Program & Advocacy committee identified three areas of focus for 2026-27. These will drive their efforts in research and community education, program positions and fact gathering to support local and state advocacy. They're looking for new team members.
We started this League year with 221 members and are now 295 members strong! Our membership goal for this year is 350 members.

After the Senate's continued work on its version of the reconciliation package to allocate billions of additional dollars to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP), they were unable to pass the bill before recessing for Memorial Day.

LWVSA’s Voter Services committee plays an important role in empowering voters to participate in elections and make informed decisions. In preparation for the upcoming November election, Voter Services is looking for volunteers to help. The committee will host a virtual meeting on June 24 at 5:30 pm. They are seeking volunteers passionate about voter education and civic engagement.

In the summer of 2013, the military brought my family to San Antonio, and we fell in love with the community and decided to stay. I have been a “professional volunteer” for almost thirty years.

In August 2025, Texas enacted new Congressional district boundaries, which began a spate of redistricting efforts in other states. More recently, the US Supreme Court's ruling in Louisiana v. Callais is leading to increased gerrymandering around the country. Government does not choose its voters; voters choose their government!

I thoroughly enjoyed being a Girl Scout as a young girl. I loved singing around the campfire, working on projects, learning new things and exploring with friends. There was the troop camaraderie, of course, but there was also a sense of accomplishment and purpose to our activities. One song we always sang gathered around a campfire was Make New Friends. As I meet new League members or build relationships with new community partners, I am often reminded of the lyrics.

Neo Thomas, the 20 year-old son of the League’s graphic artist and web designer, Harry Thomas, drew the cover for the May runoff edition of the Voters Guide. He saw his dad's mockup and he promised "something better." Within 10 minutes, he had a rough sketch; within an hour, he had a finished product.

On April 2nd, the Bexar County Elections and Voter Engagement Advisory Committee held its first meeting to begin its work serving Bexar County Voters.
The League of Women Voters Texas held its biennial convention in Corpus Christi from Friday, April 17 through Sunday, April 19.

Part of the convention’s order of business was to vote to approve a list of nominees to serve on the LWV TX Board beginning June 1, 2026.
LWV US has collaborated with Andrea Pippins, an artist and author, to create an image that will inspire women to join the Unite and Rise movement.
On Saturday, March 28, many League members participate in the No Kings March, using their voices to defend democracy.
For 35 years I taught math and statistics to students at Trinity University, so education has long been an important part of my life. The League’s mission of helping citizens understand the voting process, the issues, and the candidates aligns with my strong belief in the power of education.

The League of Women Voters of the San Antonio (LWVSA) Area along with 100 partner organizations are leading their first social media campaign to encourage voter participation. In an effort to increase voter turn-out for early voting, Feb. 17-27, and primary election day, Mar. 3, the League is inviting groups and individuals to help broadcast the Let’s Go Vote campaign by using ready made content, and graphics by local artists, and sister duo, Manola and Maria Ramirez.

Changes to United States Postal Services' processing of mail may impact voting.
My parents modeled and encouraged education, civic engagement and volunteerism. Having long appreciated League of Women Voters (LWV) efforts which combine these three values, I joined its local San Antonio chapter in 2021. Registering newly naturalized citizens to vote and assisting the Youth Voter Outreach Committee at community events and on college campuses are especially rewarding experiences.

In October, we reported that LWVSA, other Leagues and nongovernmental entities were no longer permitted to provide voter registration services at administrative naturalization ceremonies. This was due to United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) adopting a new policy that banned nonpartisan, third-party voter registration organizations from participating in USCIS-led naturalization ceremonies.

My lifelong social justice journey began in high school when I founded a partnership with HEB to provide free Thanksgiving meals for families in need—a program that continues to serve my hometown decades later. I expanded on this work throughout college at Tulane University: volunteering with food banks and community kitchens in New Orleans while studying the systemic roots of hunger and poverty.

The League of Women Voters launched Unite & Rise 8.5 in May 2025. Its goal is to build a movement of 8.5 million individuals to unite and rise up against the anti-democratic actions of this administration.

The number 8.5 million is a large number, but it is the estimated number of people it would take to bring about change through nonviolent protest. This is based on the following finding from the Carr-Ryan Center for Human Rights: “Nonviolent protests are twice as likely to succeed as armed conflicts . . . and those engaging a threshold of 3.5% of the population have never failed to bring about change.”
The LWVSA Community Outreach Committee is launching a Voting Rights Education for the Incarcerated program to inform incarcerated and formerly incarcerated citizens of their voting rights. The League received a $5,000 grant from the Texas Bar Foundation to fund the initiative.
The author, Trish Nicholson, is the great-great-niece of Minnie Fisher Cunningham. "Minnie Fish", as she was know by her friends, was a leader in the Texas suffragist movement. Later she was recruited to help lead the national suffragist movement because of her notable skills. Read more about this amazing Texan.

Working around the clock, the Bexar County Elections Department eliminates the backlog of voter registration applications.
Recent changes in federal regulations prohibit LWVSA and other nongovernmental agencies from participating in some, but not all, naturalization ceremonies.

Local commentators have posited that voter turnout in Bexar County’s May 3, 2025, local
election was suppressed because the voting period coincided with the annual Fiesta celebration
and voters were overwhelmed by too many candidates: (27) twenty-seven running for mayor
and numerous candidates for each city council race.
Analyssa Garcia joined the LWVSA Board of Directors as Secretary in March of 2025. In this role, she supports meeting coordination, documentation, and civic outreach efforts.

You will receive an email from the LWVUS asking you to log in to the portal for the first time. You are not being asked to renew or pay dues, only to log in and complete your member information. Your annual renewal date will remain the same.

All of us at the League of Women Voters of San Antonio are saddened to learn of the recent passing of Evelyn Bonavita, a longtime member of the League. Evelyn served as president of the League of Women Voters of San Antonio. She was also the president of the Texas League. She passed away on November 12 in Austin where she had moved earlier this year.
The League of Women Voters of the San Antonio Area was recognized at the City Council meeting on November 9 for our work. Mayor Ron Nirenberg introduced the League as “the organization fighting a good fight for democracy for over 100 years.”

The 88th Texas Legislature passed several laws that affect procedures in voting and elections. They go into
effect before the November 7 Constitutional Amendment election.
New bipartisan laws are designed to lower rejection rates of mail-in applications and mail ballots and to improve the ability to track them. This follows the rejection of thousands of ballots after a 2021 law created new and confusing identification requirements.

Nancy Price, former president of the League of Women Voters of San Antonio Area and a long-time member, died on November 27, 2022. She helped build the platform for civic participation here in Bexar County, on which we stand so proudly today and continue to empower voters and defend democracy. A memorial service will be held January 7 at 2 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of San Antonio, 7150 I-10, San Antonio, TX 78213.
The League was honored during NAACP Freedom Fund Celebration for its important contributions for providing valuable information for voters in the San Antonio Community.
